The signing of Lockett, announced on Tuesday night, creates one of the most formidable partnerships ever seen in the AFL with it's all-time leading goalkicker, dubbed "Plugger", teaming up with this generation's most destructive forward in "Buddy" Franklin.

Plugger will also be working closely with Kurt Tippett and Sam Reid, both on track for big seasons after injury-plagued years in 2016, and Bolton said the trio would benefit immeasurably from Lockett's unparalleled experience.

"He was such a special player that could understand ball movement and read the play and he was deceptively quick, Plugger, as well," Bolton said.

"It's not just the kicking, it's the little nuances of the game, he just knows. I get a sense that he hasn't watched much footy lately but you don't need to when you're that sort of player.

"He just knows how to manipulate his opponent and get to the right spot, and just his fluency of kick is unbelievable.

"What a wealth of knowledge to draw upon, [there's] no better kick for goal. To have him and also Nick Davis teaching some of the young guys, it's just a really special thing."

Bolton's career overlapped with Lockett's and he played two seasons with the man who plundered an astonishing 1360 goals in a career spanning almost two decades.

And while this is his first official role at a football club since retiring in 2002, Bolton said the man who was recruited from St Kilda after the 1994 season had never lost his passion for the Swans.

"I still look back and I can remember 2005 and passing the phone around as we were on the bus going to the hotel before a grand final and someone passed the phone and said it's Plugger on the phone," Bolton said.

"Just the lift on everyone's face when you get a chance to speak to him.

"I was a Saints supporter as a kid so I absolutely idolised Plugger. I debuted three or four weeks after he kicked the 1300 [goals].

"I can still remember my first kick to him at training and I butchered it. I was that overwhelmed that I was kicking to the greatest goal kicker of all time. I missed him by a mile and he gave me a bit of a disgruntled look."

Two-time premiership player Bolton was inducted into the Swans' Hall of Fame on Tuesday night having played 325 games for the club, winning the 2005 and 2012 flags.

"Just to see some of the wonderful players who were there last night, to have Tony Lockett in the room and Peter Bedford and Bobby Skilton," Bolton said.

"It was something really special. I was a bit overwhelmed by the whole experience. I count myself as very lucky the way I finished my career.

"I'll always cherish the moments the club has given back to me. I certainly don't deserve the accolades or anything like that that have been bestowed upon me across the time.

"That's what we always try and impress upon the young guys, to give us much as you can to the club because it comes back tenfold, they're a very loyal club and the fabric is really rich and strong."
