Hardie takes aim at 'lazy', 'cheat' West Coast players

Former Brownlow medalist Brad Hardie has levelled both barrels at the West Coast Eagles, labelling the playing group as 'full of cheats' and 'lazy' after their 44-point loss to Hawthorn in Launceston on Saturday afternoon.

Once again the Eagles were competitive in the opening stages of the match before being blown away, with the Hawks, led by an eight-goal haul from spearhead Jarryd Roughhead, pummeling the Eagles after half-time.

Talking to Radio 6PR on Monday morning, Hardie took aim at the players and coach Adam Simpson, accusing the players of cheating themselves on the training track.

“They’re woeful, they’re cheats and something’s not right down there,” he told Basil Zempilas and Steve Mills.

“I reckon there’s a few blokes down there who aren’t doing the work...they don’t train hard enough and they don’t work hard enough.”

Hardie also said he heard coach Adam Simpson had accused players of missing weights sessions the players said they had completed.

“When the pressure comes on they go missing.”

“If you’re cheating off the ground in your training, you’re going to cheat on the ground.

“Adam Simpson has a few questions to answer.”

The Eagles have now slumped to 11th on the AFL premiership ladder, with just four wins from 11 games after putting together three wins in the first three games of the season.

Troublingly, the Eagles have not won a game against a team above them on the ladder, defeating the Western Bulldogs (14), Melbourne (15), St Kilda (17) and Greater Western Sydney (18).

Their next game is against the Gold Coast Suns at Patersons Stadium on Saturday, with the Suns currently sitting eighth on the ladder.

    • Spot on pall. The sad part is that those same 5 appear also no doubt feature in the top 10 earners at the club. They have got it wrong massively.

      • Well it seems mr h is stating the obvious. The coach is in his first year and will no doubt make changes at seasons end. Their not going to win a flag this year unless a miracle happens. WCE Players are ultimately playing for their footy careers right now.

        • You do realise that Brad Hardin is a miserable old coot who's had a grudge against the Eagles since Malthouse was there, don't you? He and Woosha hate each other too. Why? The playing group lacks talent and speed. There's no mystery about it. Put away your grinding axe Hardie, you're a joke and everyone knows it.

          • He's not the only one though. Listen to Brereton during the TV broadcast, when NicNat was sidestepped and put in a woeful chase (and he wasn't smoked by someone like Hill either). This was the same NicNat that only a couple of weeks ago had set a GPS record for speed at the club over 20 or so metres. Something has gone pear shaped in the fitness department at WC.

          • Hardie may be an irrelevant old bloke, but he has got it 100% right, which should make you very worried if you follow the WCE.

On paper, the team is good enough to make the top 6. The fact that it can't tells me the coach is not able to deliver an acceptable level of performance. The reasons why will no doubt come out over the coming 12 weeks. Either way, it is going to be a long time before the WCE play finals again.

        • What's new about Hardie's ravings. He interviewed Simpson a few weeks ago & suggested that he drop Naitinui. When Simpson explained his reasons Hardie waited until he had disconnected & then let his vitriol flow. Who cares what he thinks. The Eagles are riding rough seas at the moment. The club is big enough to assess its position & will rectify the error sooner rather than later. Just remember there are probably 10 other teams that would jump to be in the Eagles shoes; particularly those bankrupt Victorian teams that are kept afloat by the likes of the Eagles.
