It was last exam and then straight into it for the defender, who was Melbourne's seventh pick in the national draft, 56th overall. Smith captained the Vic Metro Youth Girls team this year and was best-on-ground in their grand final.

Smith worked hard at the Dees' first official training session on Tuesday evening, but said she had already been spending time around the club.

The players had got together for an introduction day recently.

"It was the most amount of excitement in one room as possible, it was crazy, it was smiles, nerves, excitement," she said.

"We all got along so well, there were lots of laughs and heaps of fun on the first day, so that was great."

The accuracy of her kicking has been a focus since she got drafted, including kicking for goal.

Head coach Michael Stinear has been giving her one-on-one instruction and Smith said she was already seeing improvements.

She hopes to line up at half back when the season gets under way.

"I think that's where I play my best footy, an attacking kind of role, but really strong defensive lockdown as well," she said.

Smith will be one of the younger women in the first season of AFLW, where players range in age from 18 to their mid-30s.

While many of the women players will be balancing training with full-time work, Smith plans to lead football clinics over the summer and work on her own game.

Smith said some of her older teammates had taken the younger women under their wings as they all got used to life at Melbourne.

"I think being one of the youngest is awesome, we're the start and we can have 10 or 15 years [in the game], I want to be playing as long as I can," she said.

"There were women who used to be at clubs I played for who never got the opportunity, they retired and now they're coming back because they want to play, it's going to be amazing."

After her playing career is over, Smith hopes to take up coaching and she was happy she landed at Melbourne, a club that had been a pioneer in promoting the women's game.

Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs held a series of women's exhibition matches, before the AFL announced it would form a national league.

"I feel like they're doing it right," she said.

Collingwood women's team also held their first official training session on Tuesday and president Eddie McGuire made a brief appearance, sticking his head out of a window to cheer the players on.

Carlton were set to hold their first session on Wednesday evening.
