Forgive our leaders - they're having a lovely, lovely crisis

WHEW - they signed it.

Obviously, there was always a bit of anxiety about whether all those premiers would ever agree to that $42 billion worth of free stuff. But they did - and did you ever see a happier little bunch of vegemites?

In the old days, the premiers' conference tended to be a heavily orchestrated display of flounce-out. Yesterday, it resembled nothing so much as an episode of Supermarket Sweep, as the state and territory leaders zoomed about joyfully, piling their trolleys high with federally funded loot.

Schools, roads, railway wigwags - there was a lot of offer, and they gobbled it up.

Even the lonely Liberal Premier, Western Australia's Colin Barnett, had to make a visible effort to look sheepish as he joined the scramble for the Rudd billions. There was

much excited talk of partnerships, roll-outs and "shovel-ready projects".

There are to be staged deliveries and a whole network of co-ordinators-general linking hands across this wide broke land. Kevin Rudd held court passionately and unintelligibly for several minutes on the details of the administration structure. It seems that after a spot of light benchmarking, most of these projects are in fact shovel ready.

In his enthusiasm for the $14.7 billion he is spending on school buildings, the Prime Minister announced - all in the space of a single sentence - that he would be rolling his sleeves up, cracking heads

AND knocking skulls in the weeks ahead.

Those poor children!

The Victorian Premier, John Brumby, was especially ebullient. He declared many of his projects to be "site procured, community consulted and ready to go".

"We haven't had such good news … since the last COAG meeting" he grinned.

The South Australian leader, Mike Rann, was also very enthusiastic, and proudly announced plans to stage his own summit of school principals and administrators.

Ten minutes of this carry-on is enough to bring on distinct feelings of violent shovel readiness in the average observer, but we have to forgive these state and territory leaders. They are having a lovely, lovely, crisis.

There was near silence when the nine leaders signed their nine copies of the agreement. After some initial confusion, it was agreed that each leader should sign the agreement in front of him or her, then pass it to the leader on their immediate right for further inscription.

At the far end of the road sat Councillor Geoff Lake, a charming-looking adolescent who was there representing local government.

Cr Lake didn't get either a pen or an agreement, so he simply busied himself handing the completed sheets to an attendant, like a helpful diner clearing his own table.

And the Prime Minister saw what he had created, and he found it to be good.

Annabelle, love Ya! Takes guts to use journalistic licence, of free speech, unbridled by any 'undue influence'. And on the seventh day ... he sleepeth. The story of ancient has a snake in the grass- "What if ..." My emails today from seasoned pensioners all over the world have read your observations, my 'wonder' of those who are really struggling and applaud 'good old fashioned values 'ie "out of debt, out of danger". Even quoting scriptures in Paul "Brethren, owe no man anything, but love one another", again from the wise sage Solomon "the borrower is servant to the lender". And local history "Do debt, do time". Of course 'Plastic' is 'fantastic'. Stephen Conroy in Senate quoted a $2 plus billion interest- over what time frame? when tax receipts come back in, he said. "Marry in haste, repent at leisure" - Marry money with debt is a direct line to poverty. Speculation days are over. The gamblers are in hiding world wide, watching for suckers like our PM to take on new debt, strangle us 'down-under' and to buy us out. Welcome to Terror Australis.

They're only happy because someone gave them something for nothing. Will they spend it wisely or will they do what NSW does and put it into consolidated revenue for use in other ways.Remember the billions given out last year for health.......where is it ? It sure has'nt found its way into the hospital system. These guys are fiscal bandits and could'nt run a chook raffle properly. Della Bocsa says we have the best health system in the world.....what world is he talking about,Mars. Mismanagement will see this money sink into the abiss that is State Treasury. But look on the bright side,we'll have a lot more fireworks this year or another visit from the Pope.

While it may be irresistible to poke some fun at the evolving crisis (the source explains a lot), I'm sure that the additional 300-500.000 unemployed will have difficulty appreciating the humour. Then again, most laughter is at someone else's expense.

I was battling to see what was going on with the dust kicked up from the stampede for the dash for not so free cash. Just how much reading of this cash giveaway has been done by our Premiers before signing on the dotted line? I hope we haven't been sold a barrel of snake oil by a snake oil salesman.

To Rudd and all of his greenie friends - you are confiscating land to ensure a green philosophy. You are not supporting the infrastructre to maintain it. Hence - unmanaged greenie belts are out out control. When a disaster occurs such as the current one you accept no responsibility. You rely on an economist to direct your policies on the new buzz word 'global change. to blame what is happening. (Where have they incorporated the fire-bug factor) Where is this idiot now, like your greenie friends speaking out? Additonally, Rudd and all of your labour company who gives all of the huge contracts out to developers maintaing an environmental perspective. Ooops! I've worked it out your will tax the sh... out of us.

I cant wait to get my hands on that $950 good old Kev's handing out. I'll be down to the TV store in a flash to buy that big plasma, or LCD that I couldn't afford last week. I'll be helping the country wont I? I'll be injecting a large sum of money into the Australian economy, wont I? Well, not quiet. You see, the plasma or LCD I'll buy is probably made in China,Indonesia,Japan or somewhere other than Australia. So wont my dollars be going off shore? What if I buy some clothes, will they be made in Australia? Probably not. Maybe I should shove it into some greedy little poker machine, surely that"ll help the country, wont it? I'm not too sure about that either . So what'll I do with it? I know, I'll donate the lot to the Labour Party, at least then I can be sure that when its wasted, it'll be wasted in Australia.

$10m from the Government for bushfire victims! That's not just a donation that's an insult. Billions of $'s are handed each year to overseas countries. C'mmon Mr Rudd dig deep, be compassionate and help YOUR nation don't just leave it up to the 'man(&woman) in the street' to compensate.

My hubby and I are pensioners at the time being, with three school aged children, and these bonus's, Kevin Rudd is handing out, has been a GOD send to us. We are now debt clear, been able to pay those bills we were struggling with before, and, also able to treat the kids to something that we didn't have the money for beforehand. I believe Kevin Rudd is doing the best he can with how John Howard left it. And I also believe that John Howard did the best he could from the last prime minister before him.

What are we doing giving precious money back to taxpayers when we could be starting a war or something? It's an outrage.

I'm wondering what planet shezzallee is coming from. Did you say how John Howard left it. It's obvious he left it in a pretty good state, other wise you wouldn't be getting these hand-outs. Don't you realize John Howard is the only reason Rudd was able to give out that money. I well remember when he took over from the Hawke/Keating Govt, every household in the country had to fork out $100 to get us out of the dire straights we were put in by that blundering pair, Hawke/Keating. I suggest, you'd better thank our John Howard/Costello team for getting us out of the gutter, so now my dear, you are getting this hand-out. Just keep in you mind where it came from. Do you work, we've had 4 kids, had to educate them and we never had a hand out on anything. We are not business owners, or rich, we are struggling like most, missing out on the lot. I've gone 65 and still working, are you??????
