Sol Trujillo on Australia and racism

Controversial former Telstra chief Sol Trujillo has taken a swipe at Australia, describing the nation he called home for four years as racist, backward and like "stepping back in time".

Asked in a BBC interview whether there was racism in Australia, Mr Trujillo said: "I think it was evident in a lot of ways with me personally but more importantly with others."

What do you think of Sol's comments?

I don't think Australians had an issue with Sol's "race" - it was all about job performance and value for money. He came across as a self-serving, money-grabbing opportunist who drove the share price down almost 40%. Race has nothing to do with it. If he’s so proud of the great job he did for Telstra, then why the sneaky exit?

I very much believe racism is rampant in Australia. But define racism? I am of ethnic background. I can't stand 'ockers' - to me that means that swearing, dole bludging, all wogs-should-be-sent-back kind of person. You know? Does that make racist???

Sure, the good ol' USA ain't racist, eh Sol? Or backward (who still uses gallons and pounds)? Kind of glad you're gone, Sol. You brought nothing to the Australian community, but seem to have taken a lot.

This fellow seems to have a flair for controversy and little else. He has exited from his last three jobs under a cloud. In Australia he couldnt manage to maintain good relations with his major shareholder (The Australian Government) and dropped the share price by over 25%. He hired senior people from overseas all of which quit before he did. As to racism being called names by the press while on $10 million plus hardly counts

Generally Australia is not a racist country. Both sides of politics have a fair view on racial harmony and equal rights. Unfortunately there are a small number of people in the cross section of the society who still believe in the superiority of the white Arian master race. And the sad fact is that there are police officers and legal practitioners who dish out racist comments in great extent. If they can do it, how can we expect better from the public? I just wish Sol Trujillo a safe return to the US.

i do not know what Sol's problem is,We gave him a job.We overpaid him.He could not do the job.he eccepted huge bonuses he did not deserve.he walked away from his contract early with a huge golden handshake he was not entitled to.and we are racist?biting the hand that fed him!

He knows what he's done to Telstra - a position from which it might never recover. He also knows that Australians don't kow-tow to anyone, in particular temporary placements from overseas who bring in their mates to gate-crash the party. Regrettable we were too weak and not empowered enough to prevent the rorts taking place. The Telstra board and shareholders were too weak to rein in his way too frequent wanderlusts overseas. As a result Sol should be eternally grateful to Telstra and Australians instead of biting the hand that fed his gluttenous appetite. In another country he might well be in gaol.

I fully concur with Sol. No one now a days calls a black, a nigger or whatever. It is too crude to do so. But Australia has a very subtle racism by discrimination especially in the work place by ignoring to reward people who grossly out perform and who are highly superior in performance year on year just because they are not of the same colour as an Anglo Saxon. I have seen so many instances in my last two decades here, a person is just promoted in their job just because they are white though they may not be worth their position. In fact quite a large proportion of middle management cadre in Australia are of very mediocre or very low calibre. They also have this superiority complex just because they are white. In fact Australia could progress much more in the world provided it gets rid of this discriminayion. Australia claims it is part of Asia but the reality is far from the truth and the Asian countries fully understand this.
