What girl doesn't love a swirly, psychedelic Emilio Pucci print? They look like just the thing for relaxing poolside in Monaco.
Seeing as those gorgeous kaleidoscopic hues are made for summer, it sort of figures that this particular label isn’t quite as renowned for its forays into winter wear.
One of its latest offerings on posh online boutique Net-a-porter is a pair of big, furry earmuffs. Sounds all right so far?
OK, now bear in mind that these earmuffs are super sized and made of "lapin" (design houses seem to use the French word for rabbit to soften the blow for sensitive souls who don’t want to wear bunnies but don’t mind a good steak). Furthermore, they are a bright, violent shade of purple, quite lurid really.
Their big, puffy, purple nature would surely make the wearer look like she's suffering the world's most catastrophic ear disease or wearing part of a Muppet costume.
Net-a-porter’s description of when a girl might wear these earmuffs is "on the piste".
I'm no snow bunny and thought, oh, indeed, you’d have to be pretty piste to want a pair of these. Especially when you consider the cost - 191 pounds plus 30 pounds postage for a grand total of about $470 Australian dollars.
It transpires that "piste" is a term used in Europe meaning a marked ski run or path down a mountain for snow skiing, snowboarding and other mountain sports.
But I thought when one is on the piste in St Moritz and hobnobbing with the kind of crowd that would appreciate one's expensive ear coverings one opts for svelte-looking snow gear in neutrals, monochromes and fetching pastels. Then, one retires to one's chalet for an après ski port and makes eyes at the well-to-do lads on the other side of the fireplace. I can’t help but think those gentlemen might be put off by big, purple, furry earmuffs.
I guess on the plus side these accessories make you plenty visible and so if your coordination on the slopes is sub par, you'll be easily spotted doing a faceplant down in the snow. No need to call attention to yourself, just wait for your handsome instructor to come to your rescue. Then you can get back on the piste.
