Unfortunately, very few. The government says it will employ 71 fewer full-time-equivalent staff in 2015-16 than it did this financial year. But there will be more recruitment than there has been in recent years, as agencies will have more leeway to replace staff who leave.
The biggest cuts are in the defence and immigration portfolios, which are undergoing restructures. Defence Materiel Organisation staff are merging into the Defence Department, though there won't be enough jobs there for all of them. Meanwhile, the Immigration Department and Customs merger – and the creation of the Australian Border Force – will also result in some job losses.
Other workplaces expected to lose a significant number of staff over the coming year are the ABC and the Bureau of Meteorology.
