Upmarket department stores David Jones has announced the appointment of seven executive roles and the loss of a number of senior positions in a management restructure.

David Jones chief executive officer Paul Zahra said the management restructure and new appointments would help the company deliver profit after tax growth to shareholders.

‘‘Our announcement today delivers the skill set and capability within the realigned structure that we promised in our Future Strategic Direction announcement and is one of the first steps in delivering our Three Point Strategy,’’ he said.

The former general manager of Woolworths Donna Player has been appointed in the newly created role of group executive - merchandise and Matthew Durbin has been appointed to the newly created position of executive - strategic planning.

The new position of group executive - marketing and financial services will be filled by Sacha Laing and Adriane McDermott, who has had senior marketing roles with Nike, GAP and Banana Republic, has been named as the general manager - marketing, digital and advertising.

Formerly at Toy R Us, Marion Joyce has been given the new position of general manager - marketing, promotions and publicity, former Foxtel head of brand and retail marketing Kate Whitney will be general manager - marketing and Gavin Skews has been appointed general manager - AMEX Alliance.

Mr Zahra said as part of the management restructure some positions would no longer exist and some executives would inevitably have to leave David Jones.

This includes former group executive - home and food Patrick Robinson and group executive - marketing Brett Riddington who have left the company as a result of the changes.

Shares in David Jones were down one cent to $2.37 in afternoon trade.
