Rio chief Walsh resigns from Seven board

Date

Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh has resigned as a director of Seven West Media following his appointment to the global miner’s top job and relocation to London.

Mr Walsh, previously head of Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore division based in Perth, was appointed to the top job earlier this month after the departure of Tom Albanese.

Mr Walsh had been a Seven director for four years.

‘‘Sam has played an outstanding role as a director of the company,’’ Seven West chairman Kerry Stokes said in a statement today.

‘‘We congratulate him on his new role at Rio Tinto and understand the time and geographical constraints that have led to his decision to resign from the board of Seven West Media.

‘‘The board of directors will be actively pursuing the appointment of a new independent director to the company to replace Sam,’’ Mr Stokes said.
