The number of cranes on Sydney’s skyline is set to increase with the demolition of another of George Street’s 1980s inspired office towers to make way for a new skyscraper.
The tower at at 200 George Street, opposite to the Four Seasons Hotel, is set to go under the wrecking ball later this year.
There are already eight cranes on the Sydney skyline, predominantly at the Barangaroo site on the edge of the CBD, but that will soon increase when Lend Lease start to redevelop the Sydney Convention Centre in Darling Harbour.
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has said he wants to see more cranes on the Sydney skyline to help boost the activity across the state’s construction sector.
The building owner, Mirvac, confirmed that advisory and accountancy firm Ernst & Young has signed as the anchor tenant at the site just down from the corner of Bridge Street.
On completion in 2016, the 37-storey premium grade commercial office tower at 200 George Street will comprise about 38,000 square metres of floor space in total and will incorporate design features that seek to promote excellence in sustainability, with a 6 star green rating and 5 star energy rating being targeted.
Following a design competition, Francis Jones Morehen Thorp were selected by Mirvac as the preferred architect for this project. It has been speculated that the current tower Ernst & Young lease at 680 George Street, at the World Square complex, could be converted into apartments.
Mirvac’s recently-appointed chief executive and managing director, Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz, said the new property will add to Mirvac’s co-owned and under-construction 8 Chifley Tower.
‘‘The tower will occupy a premium grade address within the financial and legal heart of the Sydney CBD,’’ Ms Lloyd-Hurwitz said.
