The Casey store was the 10th in the ACT, the Majura Park one will be the 11th.

There will be seven Aldi stores northside – Casey, Gungahlin, Majura Park, Belconnen, Macquarie, Kippax-Holt and the Canberra Centre. Southside stays static with four – Tuggeranong, Chisholm, Conder and Weston.

"As part of our long-term expansion plans we are always open to exploring new store locations. We are pleased to confirm our next location in the ACT will be within Majura Park Shopping Centre, with a store likely to open in mid-2016," an Aldi spokesperson said.

"When establishing a new store, Aldi considers the long-term potential of the area including population numbers. We work closely with local planning bodies such as councils, other businesses and community groups to help ensure new stores positively impact the local area."

The lure of a pizza oven for under $150 or a combined TV and DVD for under $130 was part of the motivation for some shoppers to get out of bed early for the opening of the new Casey store.

The Aldi "Special Buys' are legendary in their randomness and fleeting appearances and there were some extra-special ones just for the opening of the new Casey store on Wednesday morning.

Among them were the pizza oven and TV, along with other items such as a kids' Go Go Car for under $50 and wicker balcony set for $99.

Seventy-year-old Juan Vera was among the early-bird shoppers, snagging himself an electric blower vacuum for $24.99.

"That's very cheap," he said, happily, adding he would be a regular shopper.

Marco Vargas, of Casey, was also at the new Aldi early with his son Samuel, 7.

"It's going to be awesome," he said.

"We don't have to go all the way to Gungahlin now."

And, yes, he was tempted by the pizza oven.

"My wife is in Sydney at the moment so I need the OK from her," he said, with a laugh.

The new Casey store will have 15 to 20 permanent or part-time employees.

Opening hours are 8.30am to 8pm Monday to Sunday, with extended trading until 9pm on Friday.
