Click Frenzy 2013 will be 'simply amazing'

While Click Frenzy director Grant Arnott admits the unprecedented consumer rush was too much for their systems to handle, he denies the event was a failure, saying with more preparation, next year's sale will be 'simply amazing'.

A helicopter pilot, champion water-skier, owner of multiple companies , a public speaker and publisher. On paper, Grant Arnott, the man behind the Click Frenzy phenomenon, sounds as accomplished as they come.

We don't see it as a failure. We see it as a dramatic starting point and something that we will nail in the future. 

An eager start-up from a young age, Arnott, tweeted on December 2010: “Wondering if #linkedin has a limit on number of current job titles - I want to break the record.”

He may well get his wish. Arnott, 41, who lives in Mount Waverley, currently juggles four job titles including Publisher at Power Retail, Content Manager at Online Retailer and Managing Director at The Media Pad.

But it was his role as founder and director of Click Frenzy that has seen him come to national attention.

The website, which signed up major retailers to offer online deals, may have suffered well-publicised problems, but Arnott refuses to see anything but the bright side.

"We don't see it as a failure. We see it as a dramatic starting point and something that we will nail in the future," Arnott told Fairfax Media.

Remarkably, Arnott says the concept of the sale that was to “stop a nation” was only put to retailers six weeks ago.

“In defence of the retailers, [we] went to market with a relatively short time frame and I think it's a credit to them that they have been able to put something together in time."

The parent company of Click Frenzy is Arnott's own company - Global Marketplace - which he co-owns with Peter Krideris and Nigel Price.

But despite the impressive name, the company that was established “not so long ago”, is only worth about $300 according to business records.

It is registered at an unassuming small brick house in Kingsgrove, southern Sydney.

But there are grand plans for this grand sounding company.

Click Frenzy is not the first venture Arnott has dabbled in.

From 2003 to 2007 he was the group publisher of a publication called Niche and has also sat as the chair of the Online Retailer Conference and the Experiential Marketing Summit.

Arnott grew up in Melbourne, attending St Bernard's school in Essendon, before studying a degree at Monash University.

A talented water skier, Arnott skied regularly with the Victorian Water Ski Association – where his family had been heavily involved for years.

The secretary of the association, Fran Hynes, said she had known Arnott and his family– including his parents (his father, a builder, passed away in 1992) his sister and brother.

Arnott designed the website for the water skiing association, located on the Yarra River, and acted as their media representative.

“He's quite a motivated guy,” Ms Hynes said. “He has a far thinking personality and would enthuse people.”

Ms Hynes said Arnott was a "family oriented guy" who would always follow through with his "innovational" plans.

On weekends Arnott was employed to fly tourists around Phillip Island in a helicopter. When Fairfax Media contacted the managing director Stephen Peppard of Phillip Island Helicopters, he said was “not prepared to comment” on Arnott's employment.

Arnott also has his black belt in jujitsu and in 2011 ran a charity marathon in bare feet.

Next year, he is looking towards creating an online coffee and tea business under the Worldwide Marketplace band and "Click Frenzy 2013".

“With now 12 months to plan for the event and for us to prepare even further ahead, Click Frenzy 2013 should be just be simply amazing," he says, his enthusiasm unwavering.
