ACT Policing and ACT Emergency Services responded to a call for assistance at the Belconnen lake at 12.23pm.
When police arrived, a woman was found dead.
Police were unable to confirm reports the woman drowned but it is understood she died of a heart attack.
It was reported the woman had swum out to a pontoon before experiencing a heart attack and was unable to be revived when she was returned to shore.
A man who was swimming in the lake with his partner and two children told The Canberra Times that he saw a police car and a funeral home van leaving the scene about 2.40pm.
Despite the 37 degree weather, there were only a few people at the popular swimming spot on Thursday afternoon.
A police spokesman said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death was underway.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
