Big banks may yet win battle against government's 'fair tax'

The big Australian banks have a long history of successfully exercising political influence. They played a major part in bringing down Ben Chifley's government in 1949, for instance, after he tried to nationalise the private banking system. They fought off widespread calls for a royal commission into banks because the Turnbull government stood by them.
