Without a firm commitment to ban the activity it looks set to continue despite the threat of the loss of $1 million in revenue come July.

The territory is literally in a difficult position because despite any rules it makes trainers can just travel across the border to race after the NSW ban was reversed last year.

Should it be banned here, the ACT will just be an island within the racetracks of NSW.

The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club has now confirmed it will continue regardless of the loss of revenue and warns tightening the budget could affect animal welfare.

Club spokesman Kel Watt said the current high animal welfare standards might be impacted if the club lost the money and had to adjust its budget.

He said the areas likely to be affected were the club's rehoming policy, which would no longer have an indefinite time period for finding the dogs a new home, and its ability to subsidise vet bills for injured dogs to prevent euthanasia.

Mr Watt might "hate that to become compromised" but it's certainly a strong message to send the authorities.

It would no doubt horrify those who want to end the sport in the ACT because they see it as cruel and out of place in our society.

The now-quashed proposed ban in NSW was announced after a special commission of inquiry report found up to 68,000 greyhounds had been killed in 12 years because they could not, or were too slow, to race.

It also found an estimated 180 greyhounds each year sustained catastrophic injuries during races that led to immediate death.

The ACT government has not yet decided whether it will make public the report into proposed transitional arrangements for those it hopes to lure out of the industry.

But with the club intending to keep racing and now with a veiled threat over the health of the dogs, there will need to be some strong incentives for change.
