Drones are becoming a more familiar site around the territory and while rules do govern where they can be flown it is difficult to monitor their movements.
The aircraft can often be seen in residential streets and in more secluded areas like nature reserves or by the lake.
Drones have been used by businesses for high flying photography in the territory and now are part of a trial to deliver food and medications.
Project Wing has recently run a trial out at Royalla to test the food delivery service and the same trial has now begun in Tuggeranong.
Justifiably there are concerns with this trial ranging from privacy and security to whether the machines can just fall out of the sky.
Despite the trial being limited to a small number of households in the suburb and being adjacent to a nature reserve, complaints have already been lodged with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
While testing has occurred in several rural areas the Tuggeranong trial is the first time the drone delivery service will be tested in dense residential areas in the capital.
Last year the authority said it was receiving on average about one complaint a week from Canberrans concerned about illegal drone use - this had increased when an online reporting system went live.
Canberrans have reported drones flying close to their homes and shining lights in their windows.
Last year CASA had issued 12 fines by June including one for a drone flown over an Easter egg hunt at the National Library.
Drone users are not permitted to fly at night or in foggy conditions, are not allowed to fly within 30 metres of other people, and must not fly in populous areas under regulations laid out by the authority.
CASA has also ruled drone users must not fly higher than 120 metres off the ground and must be at least 5.5 kilometres away from airfields and helicopter landing sites.
The authority said it had not yet approved any further drone operations in Tuggeranong as part of the trial and would not until all relevant safety issues were appropriately addressed.
Technology like the use of drones does have an exciting potential but only if safety and privacy concerns can be dealt with.
