The proposal to regulate the amount of green space on a block of land is a concept that will be welcomed by many in the community.
While the concern about redevelopment is heightened in Canberra's inner south and inner north it is an issue present throughout the territory.
It is not a new issue but has become more prominent due to the demolishing of Mr Fluffy blocks and the rezoning that allows multiple dwellings on blocks larger than 700 square metres.
Large multi-unit projects proposed for sites in established suburbs also create tension in existing communities.
This has been displayed yet again this week by the community outcry over several of the sites planned for public housing dwellings that are being displaced by the light rail redevelopment.
The National Capital Authority's plans to "respect the character" of the inner south precinct are not designed to prevent change but will address some oft-repeated concerns.
Indeed should the proposal become accepted it would represent a significant shift in planning legislation.
The regulation of green space on blocks of land is an idea the ACT government should also consider as a way of getting additional control over the look and feel of the city.
While it is important the city grows and thrives into the national capital the Chief Minister often speaks about, it still needs to maintain the aspects that make it a great place to live.
And though development and progress is important it is great to live in the bush capital because green space is plentiful.
The appearance of McMansions throughout Canberra with little backyard space right through to tiny new blocks in new suburbs with no room for a swing-set are evidence of the problems.
Forrest in particular is an area where single houses on large blocks disappear regularly; often to be replaced with something four times the size.
Not everyone will welcome such a planning change, even if it is just within the identified precinct.
It is not hard to imagine that such a policy would dampen the interest of some property developers and investors.
