Pope Francis' plea for climate action should be taken seriously

Joseph Stalin once responded to a plea to appease Pius XII by responding "how many [army] divisions has the Pope?" A lot of the response to Pope Francis's encyclical on climate change released on Thursday will be tinged with the same arch indifference. Indeed, the encyclical, entitled Laudati Si or Praise Be To You, may even manifest outright hostility in some quarters, so candid are its criticisms and pleadings. In it, Pope Francis cautions about the consequences and costs of economic growth, expresses scepticism about market forces, and argues that the pursuit of profits should not be the sole criteria for economic decision-making.
