Sending Australian troops to Iraq is unlikely to make Iraqi army more of a fighting force

In announcing a realignment and expansion of Australia's contribution to the international effort to contain and degrade Islamic State this week, Tony Abbott followed the usual script. The decision to send an extra 300 troops as part of a joint Australia-New Zealand contingent was he said "a prudent and proportional contribution to keep Iraq safe ... and by so doing contribute to the safety of this country. This is absolutely and utterly in Australia's interest".
