Coming as it did almost a year to the day after British MP, Jo Cox, was murdered in equally cowardly attack by a white supremacist terrorist who opposed her liberal views on tolerance and staying in the European Union, it is also a reminder not all Muslims are terrorists and not all terrorists are Muslims.
One can only hope the legions of xenophobic trolls who have been using social media to call for all Muslims to accept responsibility for so-called Islamic terrorism will have the wit to appreciate this "logic" certainly applies to them.
Whether they would have the gumption to follow through by owning up to their own responsibility as stokers of the fires of hatred and calumny remains to be seen.
Anyone, and everyone, who advocates hatred and intolerance against those who hold other beliefs, have a different skin colour or have come from somewhere else must accept some of the blame for the wave of retributive madness and violence sweeping the globe.
We are all humans who are trying to make the best of things on a fragile and shrinking planet.
There is much more that unites us, including dreams of peace, hopes of safety and prosperity and a determination to make the world a better place for our children, than there are things that keep us apart.
That message has been hammered home by countless religious and political leaders in the United Kingdom since the horror of the Manchester concert attack that killed 22 and injured 59 on May 22 and the London Bridge attacks of June 3 when Islamist militants killed eight people and wounded 50 more.
Monday's attack, coming as it does close to the end of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan, appears to have been pay-back for those incidents.
It is not yet known if the alleged driver of the van who ran a group of worshippers down as they left the mosque in the early hours of Monday morning was acting alone or was part of an organised gang, or was working in concert with like-minded associates.
British police have yet to confirm eye-witness reports at least two other men fled the van.
It does appear that the attack was clearly premeditated however. The location and timing were apparently carefully chosen and the innocuous looking white delivery van was reportedly rented in Cardiff, hundreds of kilometres from London in Wales.
It was, by any definition one chooses to apply, an act of terrorism and a wake up call that while ever this madness is allowed to continue unchecked, nobody is beyond the reach of society's violent and intolerant true believers.
