Fresh from seeing the film A Quiet Passion I am moved to remind myself of another side of Emily Dickinson's life. True, Dickinson despaired over many features of her existence including her lack of traditional physical beauty, her brother's infidelity to her close friend and the clumsy religiosity of her local church, but she also helped many of us reach for the deep and lasting joys of simple things. This latter gift is sadly not so evident in the film.
