Parliamentarians on Anzac Day mouth words like they were "fighting for democracy" or "a better tomorrow" but neither a better life nor peace followed. After WWI, surviving 1st AIF members often came home broken physically and mentally or unemployable, families were left without bread-winners and within 10 years Australia was gripped by the massive economic depression that lasted until 1939.
