It only took our town council seven years to destroy the core of that community. It began in January 2010 with the removal of all three- and four-hour parking zones and creation of "No Stopping" zones in Elder and Farrer streets, Braddon, which blocked bowlers from stopping for a game.

One wonders how long the Ainslie Football Club, which bought the bowls club, will retain use of the Majura District Playing Field opposite the club and its generous parking provisions.

All nations (except two) are taking measures to reduce CO2 emissions.

The two exceptions are the United States and Australia.

I'm doing my bit to reduce CO2 emissions. Eight years ago I installed 30 rooftop solar panels and three hot-water panels. Unless nations make renewable energy their top priority, the planet faces extreme weather events beyond our imagination.

As I turn 80 this month, I won't see what happens. But your children and grandchildren will.

I hope our politicians will move from exceptions to inclusions in taking measures to reduce CO2 emissions.

To succeed, jobs in renewable Australian industries must come before winding down coal, gas and oil industries. We can't ignore the fact we're facing the biggest issue ever: saving the planet from human greed and ignorance.

Plaudits must go to the group of young people who brought a lawsuit in the US state of Oregon against the US government for "ignoring the harms caused by climate change" ("Children tackle government over climate rights", March 9, p22).

As noted in my letter of March 7, the effects of climate change are already all too obvious, especially to those who make their livings from the land. However, governments such at that of Donald Trump choose to effectively ignore the obvious and blunder on blindly.

The US has opted out of the Paris accord and gutted its administration of most, if not all, its agencies that work in areas related, directly or indirectly, to climate change. The present Australian government is little better.

It doesn't take very much homework to ascertain that these two governments, and most others, are dominated by older people. Politicians are notorious for their short-term views of the world, so they tend to fool themselves into feeling secure and comfortable by ignoring, or giving scant attention to, long-term phenomena such as climate change. Their grandchildren and/or children have a very different, much less comfortable, perspective.

I was appalled and insulted when I picked up The Canberra Times this morning to find the paper had consigned the celebration of women on this International Women's Day and discussion on the challenges that still face women in our community to pages 4 and 5.

Instead, what was obviously judged to be of greater interest and value to women and the community at large was a photo of the stereotypical hyper-masculine man displaying his muscles. To make matters worse, the theme of the photo was about how NRL players are some of the biggest and most intimidating males around. How appropriate!

Are these really the qualities in men we should be highlighting when we have such a level of domestic violence in our society? I add that I am not suggesting the man in the photo is guilty of such conduct.

What a pity for him that his image has been so misused.

This was a conscious choice by The Canberra Times. It is a shameful demonstration of the value the paper places on the contribution women make to our society.

Ronald Elliott (Letters, March 5) states that humans are "the most advanced form of life", yet this does not give our species licence to inflict horrendous cruelty.

Sadly, even though we understand the repercussions of eating animal products to our health and the environment, we treat animals as chattels and exploit their reproductive capacities. Animals in the food chain are subjected to an enormous amount of suffering: layer hens kept in filthy battery cages, pregnant sows in tiny, concrete stalls, and all sent to slaughter when they can no longer keep up with the demand placed on them.

All this is unnecessary as scientific evidence proves we have no need of any animal products to live healthily and sustainably.

Wow. That's the third time inside a week that another driver has had a go at me for driving too slow. The problem is, on two of those occasions I was doing the speed limit, on William Slim and Gundaroo drives.

On the other occasion I had a truck keen to sit in my boot while I had a car driving under the speed limit in front of me. We were approaching the point, heading south, and downhill, on the Barton Highway just before the speed limit drops from 100km/h to 80km/h. The right lane was clear and available for the truck to get past me and the car in front of me at that point but the truck driver seemed to think he was in the movie Duel.

This is getting ridiculous. I've been driving for 40 years without an accident. I don't speed and I don't sit too close to the car in front of me, but I'm starting to wonder why I bother. All I get is grief from what seems to be a majority that routinely speed and tailgate and, astonishingly, expect other drivers to accommodate them.

Why don't we have tailgating cameras instead of speed cameras? I have a totally unscientific feeling that they would be more effective.
