Politicians turn our defence forces into 'attack forces'

Thank you, Nicholas Stuart, for explaining the unpalatable realities of Australia's intervention in Afghanistan ("Tragic war achieved nothing", Times2, December 22, p1). The regular optimistic assessments, the "mission accomplished" messages, the assurance that "it was all worth it" are shown in all their hollowness. Those of us old enough to remember the follies of Vietnam have been pessimistic about the outcomes in Afghanistan and Iraq from the beginning.
