Malcolm Turnbull plays sensible centre half forward

Malcolm Turnbull made a valiant effort this week to argue that the actuating and uniting philosophy of the Liberal Party involved a lesser role for government than Labor, as well as a fundamental love of freedom, free enterprise and respect for the dignity and the worth of the individual. It was interpreted by most as an effort to dispute Tony Abbott's argument that the party membership is basically conservative, but the prime minister was actually, unconvincingly, trying to distinguish himself from Bill Shorten.
