Peter Cruddas had the misfortune of becoming treasurer of the British Conservative Party at just a time when opportunistic politicians, including Tory leader David Cameron, were making something of an issue of integrity in politics, abuse and rorting of expenses, and fears that the great and powerful, on either side of politics, might have undue influence and unfair advantages in the councils of the party, including sometimes in government.
