There will be plenty of tributes to mark the end of Lleyton Hewitt's stellar 18-year tennis career when the former world No.1 now ranked 307th walks off the court for last time at the upcoming Australian Open.
How delightful, then, that the number 27 ranked US player Jack Sock got in first with a magic moment at the Hopman Cup in Perth this week. Trailing 4-5, Hewitt was serving to stay in the first set when his first serve at 30-0 was called out by the chair umpire. Even the veteran Hewitt looked shocked when a smiling Sock called out: "That was in if you want to challenge it". Hewitt laughingly did so and went on to win not just the point but the match. The crowd loved it. Watching it is guaranteed to make you smile.
We don't know if Sock meant it as a tribute to Hewitt, or if it was just a spontaneous act of great sportsmanship. But how sweet it was, and how we wish there was more of it.
