What use is a fork against a tide of graffiti?

Many years ago, in a country far away, I worked as a teacher in a school that marketed itself as a Progressive School, complete with capital letters. Students did not have to wear uniforms, they were allowed to grow their hair to any length they liked, they were encouraged to address their teachers by that person's first name. But the thing that particularly set them apart was the provision of a special smoking room.
