When influence trumps merit

The interaction between influence and pressure on the one hand and merit and rationality on the other goes to the heart of politics. These tensions come to mind whenever yet another example of the role of influence in our democracy raises its ugly head. In the most recent case it is the political donations and political pressure brought to bear by the so-called "pokies lobby".
