But every time an election gets called, I get the sudden and overwhelming urge to move to other parts of the country.

This year, I have the urge to move to places like Rockhampton, the Central Coast, Cooma, Parramatta, Bendigo or Kalgoorlie.

What do those places all have in common? They are all in some of the most marginal seats in the country.

For as great as The Hills is, it sits in the middle of two of the 10 safest seats in the country – Berowra and Mitchell – which can make the result of this year's election already look like a foregone conclusion.

It doesn't matter if you vote for Liberal, Labor, The Greens or even the Pirate Party (yes, it's an actual political party) the outcome will be the same every single time.

In these safe seats, you won't be seeing any visits from Malcolm Turnbull or Bill Shorten throwing around cash in support for big issues in the area.

Meanwhile in marginal seats, every vote will be hard fought for, with even a single vote able to swing the result not only in that electorate but the entire election.

To paraphrase George Orwell's Animal Farm: "all votes are equal, but some votes are more equal than others".

The level of impact a person's vote will have at this election has already been predetermined, all because of a voter's address. This is something voters in western Sydney know all too well.

Those living to the east of Ropes Creek are situated in the seat of Chifley, held comfortably by Labor's Ed Husic by more than 10 per cent.

Meanwhile, those to the west of Ropes Creek find themselves in Lindsay, one of the key battlegrounds this election, with the contest set to come down to the wire.

Purely due to location, some voters will directly be able to influence the result of who forms government, while others will simply be voting for a result that was on the cards three years ago.

Some 86 out of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives are classified as safe seats, those with a margin of more than 6 per cent, meaning nearly 60 per cent of voters at this coming election will be most likely forgotten by the major parties during the marathon campaign.

Instead of simply neglecting a majority of voters this election, candidates should be making a more concerted effort to win them over, regardless of the margin needed to make it into Parliament House.

Safe seats may not get the same level of mainstream media attention as the marginals, but candidates in safe seats should be actively campaigning just the same, with every vote counting.

People who cast their ballot on July 2 in Labor heartlands or blue-ribbon Liberal seats want their vote to count just as much as those in seats that are hanging on a knife's edge.

As safe as seats can be now, they may not be safe the next time voters head to the polls.

This is a lesson that former Prime Minister John Howard learned the hard way.

Howard served in the seat of Bennelong from 1974 to 2007, with the last 11 of those years as Prime Minister.

Throughout the 33 years Australia's second-longest serving Prime Minister held the seat in Sydney's north, it was always seen as one of the Coalition's safest seats, with Howard sometimes holding a margin as large as 20 per cent.

Come the 2007 election, Howard took his electorate for granted and eventually lost to Labor by just under3 per cent.

The demand by voters in safe seats is a simple one: we want our votes to count and influence the election just as much as those in marginals, not just voting for a foregone conclusion.

Candidates who forget safe seats and take them for granted do so at their own political peril.
