Just hours after head coach Eric Hollingsworth was stood down by the national body following explosive comments about team captain Sally Pearson, Canberra's Roberts threw a high-pressure 62.95 metres to steal bronze from teammate Kathryn Mitchell as fellow Australian Kim Mickle claimed gold.

The 22-year-old dug deep to stand on the podium. She'd sat in the bronze medal position most of the night before Mitchell knocked her down to fourth with one throw remaining.

At her first Commonwealth Games in front of a packed Hampden Park, Roberts produced her best throw of the night to jump back into an unassailable third. And she's already eyeing the improvement necessary to be a major player at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

"I'm pushing 70 metres for my future," Roberts said.

"I'm going to go back to Australia and try and do some good training again and then the plan is to progress to world champs next year and Rio the year after.

"I decided to not go to the World University Games last year in the hope to spend a lot of time in my general prep, working on some strength and some technique and then qualify for the Commonwealth Games this year, and it's really paid off."

Roberts and Mickle standing on the podium ensured a happy ending to Australia's most disruptive day in Glasgow.

Hollingsworth incensed Athletics Australia after releasing a statement saying Pearson had set a poor example to her younger teammates by not attending the team's training camp leading into the Games.

It was the latest chapter in the feud between the pair, which erupted when Pearson took offence at comments made by Hollingsworth after she finished second at the World Indoor Championships in March.

For Roberts and Mickle though, the incident only seemed to spur them on.

"Everyone's just so switched on, everyone is about their results. I think even if a bomb went off somewhere they'd still be 100 per cent focused on their event," Mickle said after winning gold.

"I'm a bit of a switcher off Facebook and all that sort of stuff, and to be honest so does Sally.

"She's in our house and we're talking about all the normal crap that we normally talk about in the house. It's free and easy.

"I think that's the one thing about the Aussies. Get us out into an event, no matter what's going on, we'll give it 110 per cent. I think that's what's so cool about us."

With a Commonwealth Games bronze medal now on her CV, not even a seismic rift between Australian Athletics coach and captain will wipe the smile from Roberts' face.

"I knew the training was there to execute something big, so that was the focus," Roberts said.

"I had to compose myself a little bit and focus on the process. That was the whole aim for this competition, to not let the crowd, the people, the numbers, the places distract me, but to really just focus on letting it flow down the runway.

"I really just wanted to take as much of the experience as I could from it and learn from it and develop as much as I can for the next time I get to come out on the world stage and do it again."
