| The Canberra Times was founded in 1926. Its motto ‘To serve the national city and through it the nation’ reflects on the importance its original owners placed on serving the needs of what was then a town focused around Federal Parliament. Times have moved on as have the city and its newspaper. The changes in the make-up of Canberra from a public service town to a city that now has a larger private business sector than public sector is reflected in the evolution of city’s newspaper. In private enterprise and government, Canberra people are uncommonly engaged with the outside world and the news mix of the paper reflects intense interest in world and national news, as well as of the affairs of the city. Roy Morgan Readership Research reports the average daily readership for the Monday to Friday editions of The Canberra Times is 129,000 people. Saturday’s Canberra Times attracts 186,000 readers and the Canberra Sunday Times attracts 109,000 readers*. 70% of the weekday circulation is delivered directly to the homes of subscribers through The Canberra Times and newsagency subscription packages. On Saturday home-delivery reaches 60% of all sales and on Sunday it climbs to a whopping 80% so it’s no wonder The Canberra Times is regarded so highly within its market. *Roy Morgan Readership Research: March 2006 |
