Mr Squiggle creator Norman Hetherington honoured with Google doodle

The "man from the moon", Australia's Norman Hetherington, has been honoured with a Google doodle celebrating his life and work.

Hetherington was the creator and performer behind ABC's longest-running television series Mr Squiggle.

Arriving on the scene in his spaceship, his pencil nose poking out, the marionette Mr Squiggle spent more than 40 years turning children's squiggles into words and drawings on his blackboard.

A teacher and puppeteer, Hetherington's seven-decade career also included cartooning for The Bulletin.

Google regularly chooses important dates to celebrate with a special version of its logo and links.

Last week, Google paid homage to the Rubik's Cube on its 40th birthday by allowing users to attempt to solve a virtual cube on its home page.

Hetherington died in 2010 at the age of 89. He would have been 93 on Thursday.
