Pope Francis introduced to the world
RAW VISON: Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium.PT1M14S http://www.canberratimes.com.au/action/externalEmbeddedPlayer?id=d-2g1iy 620 349 March 14, 2013
The new Pope has been greeted with hundreds of parody Twitter accounts including one that was suspended for appearing almost too realistic.
The Twitter handle @JMBergoglio began amassing followers from the minute Argentinian cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was named Pope, going from 3500 to 130,000 followers within an hour.
It posted controversial tweets including that children would love him more than Santa Claus and that the church must protect children by barring homosexual adoption.
Parody: The now suspended Twitter account @JMBergoglio.
The tweets were in Spanish, and many influential tweeters spread the word as though it was an official account.
"Only the Church must protect these children, hug them, caress them, give them warmth, give them love, give them ... eh eh #NoToHomosexualAdoption," read a translation of one tweet from the @JMBergoglio parody account.
The account had been active since April 2012 but has now been suspended after Twitter was forced to clarify that it was not an official account. There is also a similar fake Facebook account, which was still active at the time of writing.
But there are hundreds of other fake Pope Francis Twitter accounts that can be found by searching Twitter for "Francis Pope".
The Pope's official account, @Pontifex, has been reset and now has more than 1.7 million followers and a single tweet: "HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM" – Latin for "We have Pope Francis".
HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM— Pontifex (@Pontifex) March 13, 2013
The @Pontifex account had previously been deactivated after Pope Benedict XVI resigned the papacy.
CNN reported that Twitter said about 130,000 tweets per minute were sent about the new Pope.
Before the new Pope was announced, a seagull that landed on the Sistine Chapel smokestack as the cameras were waiting for the smoke signal went viral. @SistineSeagull has amassed over 8000 followers on Twitter.
