Things were quiet in the world of racing games this year. The list in the poll below comprises of only twelve titles, and a handful of those are questionable inclusions. Some might argue that MotorStorm RC is more of a racing-themed party game that a real racing title, and precisely what genre the colourful synaesthetic PS3 exclusive Dyad belongs to is up for debate. And is Trials Evolution racing, or puzzle?
Despite the slim pickings, quality was high. Criterion's new take on Need for Speed: Most Wanted was a blast to play, reviving the original's climb up the wanted list with gameplay elements from Criterion's classic Burnout Paradise. The Forza series also got an open-world update with Forza Horizon, blending open road racing with themes of classic cars and rock 'n roll.
For fans of serious racing simulations, there were also some strong offerings. F1 2012 by Codemasters was well-received, and DiRT Showdown allowed drivers to get off-road.
Less serious were the more fun, cutesy racing games. Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed was rated highly by critics, scoring significantly better than the first game in the series. LittleBigPlanet also expanded its horizons this year, with a dedicated kart racing game.
Whether you like your racing serious or silly, there was plenty to satisfy you this year, but which was your favourite? Only one vote is allowed per person, and if I have left off your favourite you can enter it yourself in the "other" field. Results will be kept secret until next week, when I will reveal all the winners. Until then, you are free to discuss your votes in the comments below.
