Your Turn: The Fairytale of Screen Play

This year, Smoolander has blended his Screen Play year in review with one of the great contemporary Christmas songs.

Each year I question whether I should continue doing this, and each year I realise (belatedly) that I really enjoy it. So once again I have trawled through the Screen Play posts for the year and added them to a Christmas Song. I’d like to thank Kidfla5h68 for the song recommendation.

I’d encourage you to view the original tune here and then maybe sing along with our own Screen Play lyrics. Also I’d like to apologise for linking to one of my own Your Turns, but come on, “mountain dew” is in the lyrics of the original song. How could I not?

So without further ado I’d like to introduce “Fairytale of Screen Play” sung to the tune of “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues and the late Kirsty MacColl.

- = -

It was Christmas eve, Gabe,
In Minecraft.
An old man said to me “Molyneux is done.”
And then they sang a song,
Halo 4 with Mountain Dew.
We pushed our campaign and R18 came true.
Got on a lucky one
With Firaxis XCOM.
I´ve got a feeling
This year´s about the Wii U.
So happy Christmas,
I love you Journey.
I can see a better time
Where games will help me through.

They got issues at launch,
They got violence untold,
But the cost goes right through you.
The Republic’s gone Old.
When you first took my hand on a cold Christmas eve
You promised Fezstration was waiting for me.
You were handsome, you were pretty,
A handheld that’s not shitty!
When Game Masters finished they yelled out for more.
Christian computer games, Max was feeling the Payne.
We diarised DayZ
Then Dishonored the night.

And while all the Mass Effect fans were singing their dismay,
All the tributes were flowing in for Jason’s last day.

“You´re a slut, I’m a punk,
Here’s a pic of my junk!”
Sexist players in games, our undying shame
“You scumbag!” “You faggot!”
Hey, bigoted maggots!
Happy Christmas, you scum: we’ve got our own Con!

And while all the Mass Effect fans were singing their dismay,
All the tributes were flowing in for Jason’s last day.

Got stuck in Evolution,
Well so could anyone.
You took my emotions from me
When Spec Ops played through.
I kept consoles with me, Gabe.
Disappointment was my own,
‘Cause Assassin’s Creed hasn’t grown.
All the Far Cry stories from you.

And while all the Mass Effect fans were singing their dismay,
All the tributes were flowing in for Jason’s last day.

  • Great work Smoo! This is my favourite one yet, and I'm not just saying that because you used my song suggestion (well, actually I am, a bit)
Merry Christmas to all you Screenies out there and I hope you get all the games you want for 2014.

    • This is my first year following Screen Play, so seeing this song is a first for me. But listening along to the song whilst reading the lyrics you've written is truly a great experience, and feels like I'm part of a community (even if I don't comment all the time).
Great effort Smoo, really love the work you've done on this one - and a pre-emptive Merry Christmas to all [despite needing to work over the Christmas period, I'm starting to feel the Christmas cheer now!]

      • Well done Smoo, and congratulations on keeping the ball rolling - a fine take on a modern classic.
Sadly, due to changing work commitments (i.e. I now have to do some!) and an unexpected family illness (which doesn't mean 'falling off a ladder') I have been unable to post my own modest end of year contribution this year. That's right, there will be no 'Christmas Countdown'.
(Although Number 1 may well have been awarded to the Eagles classic 'New Kid in Town' for DexX's excellent replacement of Jason at the helm of the good ship Screen Play)
I hope you're all not too crushed.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to all and keep on rocking \m/

This Christmas it's Sweary Smoo. Now how do I favourite your post so I remember this?

Just checked out the lyrics as well. Will definitely be using this song next year.

      • Great work Smoo. And good song selection Kiddo.

The Dropkick Murphy's, "The season's upon us" just came on the radio to continue to get me in the mood for a good dysfunctional xmas. Worth a listen if you like Fairytale of NY.
