There is a gaming phenomenon that I call the "oh wow" moment, when a game presents something - a momentary visual, or a scene, or a new game mechanic, or a big action setpiece - that makes you sit back and applaud. Thanks to reader Lucid Fugue, we present...

The Ray Harryhausen Award for Most Impressive Moment in a Game in 2013

We've had some impressive games out this year, so narrowing down the field is going to be difficult. One that comes to mind is the first moment in Dead Rising 3 when I rounded a corner and found myself starting at hundreds, maybe thousands, of zombies, all packed into one space. I was amazed that so many characters could be shown on screen at once, with each moving independently and bumping into its neighbours.

Super Mario 3D World also fits into this category, as several of its very diverse levels surprised and delighted me when i first played through them. There was the Mario Kart tribute level, the first towering level full of sheer walls, designed for the cat suit's climbing abilities, and I was especially impressed with the first introduction of the character-duplicating double cherries. Several times while playing I grinned at the screen and said out loud, "Oh, that is GOOD!"

How about you, readers? Which games have impressed you with a particular good visual, action setpiece, or clever piece of game design?

The 2013 Screen Play awards are based primarily on user-suggested categories. On Friday 20 December, all winners will be announced.
