Optus, Virgin Mobile suffer major mobile outage

Optus, Virgin Mobile and Amaysim prepaid customers were impacted by a four-hour long nationwide outage affecting voice and data on Thursday night.

The outage affected all capital cities, going offline from about 7.45pm (AEDT) to just before midnight on Thursday.

All three telcos confirmed on Friday morning the services had been restored.

Parts of the Optus network had to be restarted on Thursday evening after issues were encountered during scheduled maintenance, an Optus spokesman told Fairfax Media.

"Prepaid customers were affected in terms of voice, data and MMS – but SMS wasn't affected," he said.

"The issues were fixed as quickly as possible in all affected areas," a Virgin Mobile spokeswoman said.

Amaysim was acknowledged the issue on its Facebook page and said its customer were affected by the outage.

Because Virgin and Amaysim use Optus' mobile towers, when one network is impacted the others are almost always affected too.

While the outage was underway, Optus said customers "may experience a degraded level of service with their prepaid mobile voice and data services for the duration of the outage".

Optus tweeted on Thursday night that engineers were working to fix the issue as soon as possible.

Virgin Mobile had not acknowledged the issue on its social media accounts until about 9am on Friday, when it began replying to customers who were affected.

The last major outage for the telcos was last October, when 2G and 3G customers were impacted by an outage in Sydney's CBD that lasted approximately 10 hours. Thursday's outage appeared to affect both 3G and 4G services.

Customers from both Virgin, Optus and Amaysim vented about the outage on social media.

"Optus being down for a few hours really made me realise how much I need my phone to live lol DONT DO THAT AGAIN!!!! @Optus," wrote @TarrynToelau.

"What happened to the telephone network guys? Your service went intermittent for the past 3 hours. It sucks big time!" wrote Deepti Waglé on Facebook about Virgin Mobile.
