THE iPad is taking the place of newspapers in more ways than perhaps anyone intended - displacing newsprint in the loo.

Seven West Media chief operating officer Rohan Lund said yesterday that tablets were being used mainly in the home, rather than as mobility devices.

''The stats show sitting on the couch is the highest use of your tablet, the next is lying in bed and the next is in the bathroom, of all places,'' Mr Lund told a Citi Australian investment conference in Sydney.

The observation, made during a media panel discussion, prompted fellow panellist and Foxtel director Ed Smith to remark that the tablet was indeed ''the newspaper of the future'', though perhaps not in the way Fairfax chief Greg Hywood, who was sitting beside them, was hoping.
