The group centre will include a 3500-square metre supermarket, a Liquorland, about five to 10 specialty shops, more than 30 apartments and parking for about 160 cars.
It will be the supermarket giant’s tenth store in the ACT and only the second to include residential development.
Coles property transactions' manager for NSW and ACT, Joseph Prestinenzi, said it was good to bring a full-line supermarket to the suburb for the first time and the company was hoping to kick-start the development shortly.
He said consultants had been engaged to help deliver the planning work and Cox Architecture had designed the concept plans for the centre.
Mr Prestinenzi said the company would also look to appoint a partner to deliver the residential side of the development.
“Mixed-use development is always challenging – Coles are very good at developing retail centres but we don’t typically do residential,” he said.
Doma Group will deliver the residential component of the recently announced Dickson Group Centre redevelopment, which will include new Coles and Aldi stores.
Mr Prestinenzi said he did not think the supermarket would take shoppers away from other retail centres in surrounding suburbs.
“We think there is quite a large catchment, there’s quite a significant market here, so we believe there’s enough here to establish a Coles supermarket but also provide enough customers for other retailers,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the construction phase of the centre would create about 200 jobs and once opened would have about 150 jobs.
He said the inclusion of medium-density residential apartments as part of the group centre confirmed the government’s commitment to provide residents with the choice of living closer to services and public transport routes.
There will also be additional medium-density housing constructed adjacent to the centre.
The Land Development Agency sold four Amaroo group centre housing sites for $8.275 million at the end of last year and one site for childcare for $882,000.
Work is expected to commence on the centre late next year and it will open in the 2016-17 financial year.
