Memory and Emotion at the Street
Capital Jazz Project finishes up at the Street Theatre on Monday, and there are still tickets to catch a very cool afternoon session with a trio of acclaimed Queensland musicians performing new work for piano, voice and saxophone inspired by Anzac letters: "Kristin Berardi, Sean Foran and Rafael Karlen explore themes of hope, fear, separation, loss, love, and conditions of war, through songs using elements of jazz and folk music in an intensely intimate and moving way." The Art of Anthropology
There's something so innately interesting about anthropology, as shown by a new exhibition showcasing the work of 28 ANU anthropologists at different stages of their career, and working on a variety of topics. "Despite the varying subject matter covered in these photographs, there is a shared ethos, a commonality of purpose: that of giving a glimpse into the worlds of the people who told us their stories and invited us into their lives…The photographs tell stories about a changing world, and moments caught at the crossroads of influences, ages, and cultures. The stories they tell are about the ways in which people shape the world around themselves, and how they are shaped by it, be it through religious, artistic, political or ethnographic practice." The Art of Anthropology - Photographs from the School of Archaeology and Anthropology and the College of Asia and Pacific is showing in the Foyer Gallery at the ANU School of Art until June 14.
What's your favourite portrait?
This weekend is your last chance to vote for your favourite portrait in the National Portrait Gallery's National Photographic Portrait Prize. Voters in the People's Choice will go into the draw to win two nights at the Crowne Plaza in Canberra, a VIP tour of the Portrait Gallery, and a Curatoreum voucher or a copy of The Companion. There have been already been more than 8000 votes for the People's Choice this year, and the winner will be announced Monday, June 15 via portrait.gov.au. Paint your way to Scotland
Now this sounds glamorous, in a down-and-out, starving-artist, liver-pickling kind of way: whisky producer William Grant & Sons recently announced its inaugural Glenfiddich Artists in Residence competition, in which one Australian artist will get the chance to live and work for three months at the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Scotland: "The contest is an open call to all Australian artists who are welcome to use any array of mediums with the competition running until July 31. Finalists will be announced on August 10 and the winner will be announced on September 18. An esteemed set of individuals will be choosing these finalists, including Rachel Griffiths, Former Lord Mayor Lucy Turnbull , Sue Cato and Nick Tobias." Four Indigenous voices at Nancy Sever
Four of Australia's leading painters from the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia are showing work at Nancy Sever Gallery in Kingston - Patrick Mung Mung,Gordon Barney, Tommy Carroll and Mark Nodea: "The paintings in this exhibition are simultaneously geographical, historical and biographical. Country is mapped with ochre to illustrate the past and the present - the artists' personal lives, their ancestors and the Dreaming. These artists use painting to depict places that are hard to access, practices discontinued, knowledge shared and fond memories, so that they may endure." Patrick Mung Mung, Gordon Barney, Tommy Carroll and Mark Nodea are showing until June 28 at Nancy Sever Gallery, 4/6 Kennedy Street, Kingston.
Slowing down in Belconnen
There's a fascinating artistic project taking shape this week at Belconnen Arts Centre. In Slowing Down Time, four artists use installation, sculpture, choreography and the moving image to examine the premise doing just that – slowly: "Each week of the project, one artist takes over the gallery, adding to what the artist before them has left behind. Over the four weeks, unexpected new works emerge, created together by the four artists. It's a project rather than an exhibition, offering visitors an experience of the artists' process." Slowing Down Time, by Louise Curham, Michele Elliot, Sue Healey and Jo Law, opens at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen, on June 10 and runs until July 5 in the Foyer.
Stalemate in Civic Square
Looking at a toy army tank got artist Samantha Small thinking, about the contrast between child's play and the harsh realities of armed conflict. Her resulting installation, on display at CMAG in Civic Square, "recalls the horrors of the Somme battle-field of World War I which coincided with the emergence of the tank as a key armament on both sides of combat…. The Stalemate project transforms CMAG's glass-walled Gallery 4 into a large-scale diorama. Combining the artist's skills of the battlefield modeller and the dollhouse maker, the installation merges the literal and metaphoric spaces of these contrasting, but oddly connected activities." Stalemate, by Samantha Small, is on display until July 5 in the outside Gallery 4, and can be viewed 24 hours a day at Canberra Museum and Gallery, Civic Square. Small will be giving a floor talk on her installation on June 17 from 1-2pm, along with curator Rowan Henderson, who will talk about the 1918 Majura Honour Roll, a gift to CMAG from the McIntosh family, which commemorates the names of five men from the Canberra region who served on the battlefields of France in the First World War.
