The identity disc and medals of John Simpson Kirkpatrick of Donkey fame: "Simpson is the most celebrated figure at the AWM. This is in keeping with his status as the most famous Anzacs. Simpson is remembered as a saver of lives, and hence a man of peace," Dr Pedersen said.

A shovel blade recovered from the battlefield after the war by Bean and his team: One participant described the fire as "a screaming hurricane of bullets" and said that men "ran at the crouch shovels and packs held before them like shields," Dr Pedersen said.

Treasure 3

The colonel has been wounded: "Lieutenant Colonel Charles Rosenthal was wearing this jacket in the headquarters dug-out on Bolton's Ridge when a shell burst in it. The wounds to his back were among the 36 that the splinters inflicted on him," Dr Pedersen said.

Treasure 4

This is my blood: "The chalice used by Chaplain Albert Talbot at his pre-battle (of Lone Pine) communion service. By the end of the battle over half the communicants were casualties and the chalice had been damaged by shellfire. It was repaired at Anzac and always treasured by Talbot. His widow donated it to the memorial in 1947," Dr Pedersen said.

A nurses kit: Wounded Anzacs were evacuated to field hospitals on Lemnos. "Knowing that they were a rare link to home, the nurses adopted a holistic approach to the wellbeing of the Australians they tended, and took on the additional roles of mother, sister or sweetheart," Dr Pedersen said.
