Although Rusty Peters, Peggy Patrick and Phyllis Thomas work within the tradition of such artists as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie and Freddie Timms, each artist has devised a specific and unique artistic language. The Warmun community, a major centre for East Kimberley art, lies a couple of hundred kilometres south of Kununurra in northern Western Australia and consists mainly of Gija speakers.

Traditionally much of the art which has emerged from this general region is characterised by its flat areas of brown and yellow ochres, contrasted with charcoal blacks, and articulate with white or black dots. The idea of mapping their land and adopting an aerial perspective, which also reveals that which lies beneath the surface, is frequently encountered in this tradition of art making. These artists are also often prepared not only to comment on the ancestral stories, but to document more recent histories and the atrocities suffered by their people at the hands of the white pastoralists.

Rusty Peters is a senior law man who turned seriously to painting in 1997 when he was over 60. . An associate of Rover Thomas, he worked in similar conventions, but in more recent paintings has incorporated western European conventions of visualisation. In a colour-filled painting, Two Laws One Spirit, 2012, flowing, rhythmic patterns from the sides appear to envelop a central form. Speaking about this painting, the artist said, "The living spirit that guides the individual spirit is the same for white people and black people. The part that makes us think and the part of white people that guides them are from the same spirit. We don't know white people's law even though there is one spirit for all of us. This is how I made a picture to show the one spirit for all, white and black."

Peggy Patrick belongs to that generation who still have a living link with the "killing times" and her mother saw her parents massacred at the hands of white settlers. In her mapping of the country she inserts a personal dimension to the landscape forms. Compositionally many of her canvases have a circular central shape with elements radiating from this epicentre. A strong painting is Yingerrewoony, 2014. The artist explains it is an image of a whirlpool at the Old Greenvale Station, which is so big and deep that her brother almost died there.

Phyllis Thomas, who was born at Riyarr on the Turner River in 1933, in her colours is the most adventurous of the three artists and has been popular with collectors ever since she started to exhibit her work in 1998. The painting Dead Horse Spring at Riyarr, 2014, is a picture of her country. She shows a Boab tree at the top, the two white areas on either side are quartz stone deposits, which are used to make spearheads, while in the foreground is the spring itself, which in recent times has been failing.

Warmun artists have continued to produce some of the most interesting work from the east Kimberley despite their small community.
