Helene Grove's Self Portrait Getting On.
Queensland artist Helene Grove has won the $30,000 Portia Geach Memorial Award for Self Portrait Getting On.
Grove, a finalist in the award in 1995 and 2007, established her painting career in the 1990s after a career in medicine. She said she was humbled by the win.
''The award plays such a prominent role in promoting the efforts and endeavours of female artists,'' she said.
The award is presented to an Australian female artist for the best portrait painted from life of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters or the sciences.
Gallery Director Jane Watters, one of the award's three judges, said the work displayed ''great sensitivity and poignancy with the realisation of advancing age''.
An exhibition of the finalists will be at the S.H.Ervin Gallery, The Rocks, until November 16.
