His hair is so sun-bleached and scruffy, you can almost smell the salt, and his eyes are gazing out at what can only be the ocean. He’s Nat Young, the world-famous Australian surfer, so beautiful he even modelled for Ralph Lauren in the 1980s. But when Sarah Engledow looks at his portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, it’s the texture of his hair that captivates her.
