A new series of shows has just opened at M16 in Griffith. In Colour Grid Series, Fiona Little has paintings that "use bought fabric with grid designs as the basis of the composition". Little is concerned with "exploring elements of painting through abstraction. She has long been interested in the horizontal and vertical because of her interest in the shape of the archetypal painting support - canvas or board - and its relationship to the constructed image". In Made in New York, Carmel D'Ambrosio is showing tapestry and embroidery that have come out of an intensive art course at the New York Studio School in Manhattan and Long Island, in which she's "applied her feelings about the city to the challenging techniques of tapestry weaving and stitched embroidery" with works that interact with the fine detail of New York City. In The Unbearable Lightness of Seeing, Canberra artist Francis Kenna has a coloured light installation that "recurrently transforms the atmosphere of the gallery space…and seeks to explore the threshold between light and shadow alongside the implicate relationship between viewers and gallery space". And, in Water Was Here, Fran Meatheringham has a series of abstract oil paintings "inspired by the interactions of water with terrain…Sources for this artwork arose from the artist's experience of walking and observing the landscape and from a basic awareness of geomorphological processes". All four exhibitions are showing at M16 Artspace, 21 Blaxland Crescent, until November 6.

He's been dead 100 years, but it's a race against time to get together a recording of the works of Frederick Septimus Kelly, the Australian pianist and composer killed at 35 in the Battle of the Somme. Leading Canberra music figure Chris Latham has launched a Pozible campaign to raise funds to launch the first portrait recording of Kelly's music on a double CD through ABC Classics, in Australia (where Kelly was born), France (where he died) and the UK (where he was educated). "He is Australia's most important cultural loss of the Great War. The vast majority of his music has not been played since his death, let alone recorded," says Latham. Thanks to the amazing survey show at CMAG, we can now never get enough of the bold and brilliant works of Michael Taylor. Lucky, then, that he'll be showing new works at Nancy Sever Gallery later this week. "He paints the landscapes and waterscapes of southeast New South Wales, capturing their rhythms and changing atmospheres," says the gallery. "His paintings stand at the junction of landscape and abstraction, though they often appear to melt into total abstraction. The artist has revised and adapted his gestural abstraction over the years so as to maintain it as his own instantly recognisable visual language." Michael Taylor – New Paintings opens October 26 at Nancy Sever Gallery, 6 Kennedy Street, Kingston, and runs until November 20.

Congratulations to our own music critic Jennifer Gall, who this week received an ACT Heritage Award for her project Performing the Past, which called on the talents of musicians and composers from different backgrounds to engage with the musical history of Lanyon Homestead and Mugga Mugga. "By performing within the house and in the spaces around it, using the house music collections and the inspiration gleaned from historical documentation –oral histories, letters and diaries – of the past occupants, the musicians will have a unique experience of acting as intermediaries between contemporary audiences and Canberra's early settlers." The project also involved restoring historically significant instruments and recording works from the household music collections. Great work, Jenny! Two new shows just opened at Beaver: Holly Grace is showing studio glass that take on the "organic forms and subtle tonal variations that occur in nature". "In the changing light of day I witness natures dawn and dusk, both sublime and transcendental in its beauty," she says. "With wonderment and fear I reflect on what lays before me, illuminated by light, transformed by thought – it is the landscape." And in The Book of Trees, Sue Lovegrove brings together the tradition of 11th century Persian manuscript illumination with documentary-style portraits of trees. "Through these exquisitely and elaborately rendered compositions, she celebrates the beauty of Persian art as well as the aesthetic and sculptural form of the tree." Solitude, by Holly Grace, and The Book of Trees, by Sue Lovegrove, are showing at Beaver Galleries, 81 Denison Street, Deakin, until November 6.

Canberra photographer Susan Henderson is preoccupied with capturing people in public spaces, "abstracted from their lives and context; people populating the built or natural environment and the human element in and on the non-human scale". In a new show at The Photography Room, "Susan has caught a transient moment and a feeling for place. Her most successful images resonate an emotion or inference of being there".
