New Harry Potter book announced

Author JK Rowling announces her latest book which follows a new generation of Hogwarts pupils will be available on July 31.

Now, nearly 10 years later, author J.K. Rowling has announced a new book which will follow the next generation of characters as they set off for Hogwarts.

In a post on her website, Rowling said the novel, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, would be available both online and in print on July 31.

The new book picks up exactly where Deathly Hallows left off, as a grown Harry and Hermoine wave goodbye to their children as they head off to Hogwarts on the iconic Platform Nine and Three-Quarters.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child follows Harry as a middle-aged employee at the Ministry of Magic and his son Albus as they both struggle with the family's legacy and dark forces.

But some background details: the new novel is actually a play, and isn't even written by Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is written by author Jack Thorne and is only showing at the Palace Theatre in London.

Fans everywhere wrote to Rowling saying how devastated they were for being left out of the story's new chapter.

Rowling collaborated with Thorne on the script, which will now be released as the eighth novel.

While some people blasted the book on social media as a "shameless attempt at cashing in", the book's publisher said it was good news for fans.

"J.K. Rowling and her team have received a huge number of appeals from fans who can't be in London to see the play and who would like to read the play in book format - and so we are absolutely delighted to be able to make it available for them," Little, Brown Book Group chief executive David Shelley said.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child comes just months before the silver screen release of prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne will play a British wizard being pursued by American wizarding authorities in New York.

Rowling said the new book's first release would be a special rehearsal edition and would be replaced by a "definitive collector's edition", allowing the play's creative team to make changes to the production.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be available at midnight on July 31.
