A pair of new exhibitions is showing over at Photoaccess in Manuka. You can really push the boundaries when you’re an established artist, and that’s what Suzie Edwards has done with her latest show, Inner Necessity, in the Huw Davies Gallery. Her works are “diptych and triptych amalgams of seemingly unrelated images, which seen together, invite the viewer to muse, make up stories and create their own connections”. It’s a show that makes you think. And, in the Multimedia Gallery, three artists have collaborated on an exhibition of phonography – with lots of seemingly random photos of the ordinary and the spontaneous, but curated with a message. Mel Edwards (creator of the blog Nah it’s Canberra), Kerry Edwards and Alison Spence, have revealed three different but enticing ways of looking at urban Canberra through the lens of a smartphone. Inner Necessity, by Suzie Edwards and #urbancanberra, by Mel Edwards, Kerry Edwards and Alison Spence, are showing at Photoaccess, Manuka Arts Centre, Cnr Manuka Circle and New South Wales Crescent, Griffith (next to Manuka Pool), until August 24.

Wildlife love in Braddon
African-born Gavin Playfair has an exhibition of wildlife drawings and paintings at Paintbox Fine Art this month, inspired by his secluded surrounds on the NSW south coast. “To capture the character of a creature and its world, to express its beauty and fragility is the challenge of each painting,” says the artist. “I need no other reason for painting than my love for these creatures and the habitat that they share with us.” A Natural Selection, by Gavin Playfair, is showing at Paintbox Fine Art, 32 Lonsdale St, Braddon, until August 24.
Dissected by time and space
As part of Science Week, Michael Winters has an exhibition of sculptural landscapes exploring “the nexus between landscape and time and space”. “I see what I am doing as taking the real landscape and combining it with the vastness of space and the constant ticking of time into a more challenging relationship,” says the artist. The exhibition opens today, Saturday August 16, at Strathnairn Arts, 90 Stockdill Drive, Holt, and runs until September 7, with a floortalk by the artist on August 23 at 3pm. Winters will be also present a talk about his work at 11am today at Theatre 3, Manning Clark Centre, ANU, as part of Science Week.
Sand in the hair
There’s much to love and get lost in at the latest show at the National Portrait Gallery. As you wander through Arcadia: Sound of the Sea, the ocean feels much closer than the usual two-hour mountain drive. But hearing curator Sarah Engledow talk about how she put the show together adds an entirely new dimension, and will have you back for repeat visits. She’ll introduce the show at a free lecture at the gallery on Wednesday, August 20, at 12.30pm. Arcadia: Sound of the Sea is showing at the National Portrait Gallery until October 19.
Greek myths at ANCA
Local artist Graham Eadie has a new solo exhibition exploring mythology through painting – specifically, the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, in which Jason builds a boat, the Argo, and sets sail with all the heroes and demi-gods of the day. “Like all good myths, this one presents drama, love, betrayal, action, revenge, tragedy and a series of challenges which must be overcome ... Eadie’s acrylic paintings bring all this tragedy and drama to life through layers of paint; moody colours, evocative textures and forms which hint at the story within.” Argonautica, by Graham Eadie opens Wednesday, August 20, at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, until September 7.

Open – all potters!
As mentioned last week, potters all over the country are opening their studios this weekend to give people an idea of what goes on behind the scenes in the work of a ceramicist. Along with Sarit Cohen in Macquarie, Maryke Henderson will open her studio at 104 Sharwood Crescent in Evatt as will Susan Hill, and Chris Harford over at the Watson Arts Centre, 1 Aspinall Street, Watson. NAIDOC in Cooma
Raglan Gallery in Cooma is opening its third annual NAIDOC Art Exhibition tomorrow, with works by Alice Williams, Jandemarra Wall, Pauline Syron-Coxon and young emerging artists. “Works by artists from the local community of Cooma represent their life growing up on country, and the traditional owners of this South Eastern region of NSW, descendants of the Walgalu and Ngarigo tribes, represent 40,000 years of living and caring for the land,” says the gallery. There will also be displays of artefacts and an installation from the famous Price’s Cafe. The exhibition at Raglan Gallery, Lambie Street, Cooma, runs until September 13.
