CURB Your Enthusiasm, the post-Seinfeld project of that show's co-creator, Larry David, has never received a prime-time free-to-air television berth in Australia but that hasn't prevented one of its stars, J.B. Smoove (who plays David's foul-mouthed sidekick Leon), developing a sizeable cult following here.

That's not all that surprising given Smoove has been responsible for some of the funniest, most memorable scenes in the (partially improvised) TV show's history.

The crowd was reminded of this before Smoove made his entrance on Saturday night, with the screening of a brief series of highlights from the show.

But what soon became apparent after Smoove had bounded on stage to a blaring hip-hop track was what the small screen doesn't capture - he is not just witty, he is also a talented physical comedian.

Throughout the show, the New Yorker used his gangly body to simulate all kinds of situations - escaping police on a stagecoach, walking in high heels, a doddering old man giving directions.

The pace is relentless, but so are the laughs. While Smoove takes on well-worn stand-up topics - women, sex, bodily functions - he does so with such energy and glee you can't help but be swept up by it.

And despite his penchant for non-stop swearing, he also shows a taste for the surreal, with scenarios that start off in fairly familiar stand-up territory, such as discussing his sexual prowess, ending up with him simulating chin-ups on a string of his own ''residue''.

In an exhausting, 90-minute- plus set, it was apparent that TV success has not curbed Smoove's enthusiasm for stand-up and the audience was just as enthused.
