Kodi Smit-McPhee

Survivor ... Kodi Smit-McPhee

Young Australian actor Kodi Smit-McPhee has been handed a major role in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

Australians will be well represented among the last of humanity to face the ape uprising in 2014.

The sequel to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, the film which was in turn a prequel to the famous Planet of the Apes series of films, will also star fellow Australian Jason Clarke, who most recently appeared in Zero Dark Thirty.

Though motion capture performance legend Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Caesar the lead chimp of the uprising, James Franco, who played scientist Will Rodman in the first prequel is unlikely to join them. "I was going to be a small part of the next one," Franco told MTV a few months ago. "There was a moment when Rupert Wyatt was going to direct the second one. Now Rupert’s not a part of it so I don’t know. My guess is I won’t be in it. Nobody’s talked to me since Rupert left."

The film will focus on a team of scientists attempting to survive in San Francisco as well as the power struggle within the ape community, where Caesar struggles to maintain dominance.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes will be helmed by  Matt Reeves, who also directed Smit-McPhee in Let Me In. Smit-McPhee who appeared in the Australian films Romulus My Father, Matching Jack and Dead Europe most recently voiced Norman in the animated ParaNorman and is currently filming The Young Ones, with Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning and Michael Shannon.

He has the lead role in A Birder’s Guide To Everything opposite Ben Kingsley and will play Benvolio in Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet which is being adapted by Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes.
